Charge
In 2007, the efforts of another task force led to a dramatic reorganization of summer sessions. That effort led to cost savings; academic control of the decision-making process; and, a transparent and equitable funding model. While these changes have strengthened our summer program, we must continue to look for opportunities to enhance the role summer sessions play in promoting student success and on-time degree completion.
Specific topics that the Provost has asked the Summer Sessions Task Force to consider include the following:
- What strategies can be employed to more fully utilize existing resources during the summer?
- Are there existing impediments that make it difficult for faculty and students to participate in summer school?
- Does the current funding model adequately address the needs of laboratory courses?
- What compensation models would you recommend?
- How should on-campus and distance education offerings be coordinated during the summer and should they have the same funding model?
- Are there academic policies that should be revised to encourage the appropriate use of summer school (e.g. course load, satisfactory academic progress, course repeat)?
- Should the current structure of the summer terms be modified to encourage increased participation?
