Comments from the Associate Dean of Division of Undergraduate Academic Programs:
Dr. Ambrose welcomed the CUE members and encouraged members present to attend the Faculty Senate meeting scheduled for October 23, 2007. The Faculty Senate will be discussing the Proposed General Education Plan as well as an alternative CHASS GEP proposal. The Senate will be voting and making a recommendation on the GEP at the meeting.
Dr. Ambrose also requested CUE to examine and look at the current GER objectives for categories that will most likely not need much revision ( including PE, Humanities, Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences). Some members expressed interest in revising some of the language in the objective descriptions. There was some discussion on how the committee should process reviewing GER category objectives as well as deadlines for any revisions.
The committee discussed several ways of reviewing GER objectives including:
• Breaking into smaller groups to look at the objectives in parallel.
• Going back to represented colleges and departments to discuss the objectives (any problems with getting courses reviewed under these objectives, etc.),
Also, a handout was given to members of courses that are currently on the STS Lists to see possibilities for the Interdisciplinary Perspectives category included in the Proposed GEP.
The committee agreed to look over the objectives for the PE and Natural Sciences GER categories and be ready for discussion by the next meeting. Catherine Freeman will send out a Word version of objectives for members to have.
Meeting adjourned at 2:35 p.m.
