Budget news: Susan Nutter, Vice Provost and Director of Libraries, gave an overview of the Libraries’ budget situation. During 2009/2010, the Libraries’ budget was cut approximately $1.5 million. To help offset the impact of the cut on the collections budget, the Libraries entire enrollment increase funding for FY10 was directed to collections. These funds, plus an allocation from the university to partially offset collections inflation, allowed the Libraries to avoid canceling many critical titles that had been identified for cancellation following the last serials review.

Recently the university asked campus units to make requests for one-time funding. Through this process the Libraries was allocated a total of $500,000 for collections inflation, plus funds to purchase the entire on-line back file of Nature, the American Chemical Society, and the American Institute of Physics. One-time funding was also allocated to increase the number of seats and computer terminals in D.H. Hill. The anticipated amount for inflation for 2010/2011 is approximately $500K.

Institutional History and Historical State: Greg Raschke, Associate Director for Collections and Scholarly Communication and Jason Ronallo, Digital Collections Technology Librarian gave a presentation on University Archives and a demonstration of the new website, Historical State : http://historicalstate.lib.ncsu.edu/. The website consists of images, time lines, and various documents and publications from the university, including past issues of The Agromeck and course catalogs. Raschke discussed how the archivist builds relationships across campus to work with the university community to identify and ingest material of historical significance. Currently, the archives are growing at approximately 400 linear feet each year. In 2007/2008, over 27,000 born digital documents were added. The ULC was very enthusiastic about this improved access to historical information about N.C. State.

Joint meeting of TRLN Library Committees: The committee discussed possible dates to host a joint meeting of the library advisory groups (with roles similar to ULC) of the TRLN Libraries (Duke, UNC-CH, NCCU, NCSU). A business meeting might focus on access and use of each other’s collections, issues with loan policies, and other areas of mutual interest. A social gathering would follow the business meeting. April 16th is the date being considered for this meeting to be held in Chapel Hill or Durham.

Website Redesign: The NCSU Libraries is undergoing a website redesign and is seeking faculty and students to volunteer to help with usability testing. Faculty and students who are interested in participating should go to the following site : http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/redesign/form.php
