Harrelson Fund - 2005-2006

Committee Charge

This Committee advises the Chancellor on expenditures from the bequest of the late Chancellor Harrelson and assists in implementation of approved projects, including selection of speakers, handling of the events, etc. Chancellor Caldwell's Memorandum dated July 18, 1961 describes the Harrelson Fund.

Each year the Committee shall select a prominent individual, distinguished in scholarship or public life, as the Harrelson Lecturer. The selection process shall be determined by the Committee, but the Committee is expected to publicly solicit suggestions and nominations from all segments of the University. The Harrelson Lecturer will typically present two to four lectures over a week to ten-day period during the regular academic year, though the Committee may make exceptions to this procedure when circ umstances make it appropriate to do so.

The Committee should maintain written guidelines for sponsors of Harrelson Lecturers specifying budget limitations and procedures including payment of honoraria and other expenses, publicity, and visit arrangements (e.g., schedule of receptions, special luncheons, seminars and meetings with Committee members and University officials). The Committee should work closely with the sponsor to assure that the potential of the lectureship is fully realized.

In managing responsibility for financial arrangements with the Harrelson Lecturer, making certain the honorarium check is presented before the lecturer leaves the campus and that all other proper expenses are paid promptly.
