NEW BUSINESS
1. The committee approved the minutes of the February 14, 2007 meeting.
2. Consent Agenda:
The consent agenda included NR 301 (revision), NR 401 (revision) and GC 450 (revision). The committee approved these actions together as part of the consent agenda.
3. Major Actions – Course Actions:
FLF 212 (new course) was approved with the following changes:
(a) On the course syllabus, the Student With Disabilities Statement (pg 6) needs to be in standard format. See Provost’s Guidelines for guidelines.
(b) On the course syllabus, Pg 5 (Visits/Guests), there needs to be clarification Museum of Arts visit in terms of transportation. Provide at transportation statement stating if transportation will be provided or if they will have to provide their own and state if there is a cost to the student for the field trip.
(c) On the course syllabus, there needs to be a clarification of how students earn credit for “participation.” Also, there needs to be a break-out of the quizzes in this grading portion. In general, the committee would like to see the quantitative and subjective portions of the grade broken out and explained more clearly so that students are clear regarding this part of the course.
(d) On the course syllabus, in the grading scale there are two ranges for the D+ grade. It appears that the lower grade range should read D-.
(e) Under consultation, the names given do not match up with the documentation provided. Please list the correct names of those who have provided memos in the document.
ECE 383 (new course) was tabled by the committee, to be reviewed pending the following concerns are addressed:
(a) On the Course Action Form:
- the Abbreviate Title must be 18 characters or fewer
- add ECE 492C under Previous Prefix/Number
- change “lead” to “led” in Catalog Description
- add appropriate course under Pre/Corequisite
- add appropriate statement under Restrictive Statement (COE only?, see Restrictive
Statement on page 3)
(b) There was considerable discussion/misunderstanding on how this course in structured from a grading perspective. There needs to be a clear explanation of what grading and evaluation the senior-level leaders do and what grading the instructor does. There was some concern related to oversight, and some concern over making sure that the students knew how they would be graded. The sections on grading need to be clarified from these perspectives.
(c) On the course syllabus, clarification is needed in the section that speaks to class participation. What does this mean from a student perspective? What do the instructors mean by participation and what are the implications of introverted students?
(d) On the course syllabus, use the Academic Integrity boilerplate provided by the Provost’s office. Specifically you must include statement on the Honor Code.
(e) On the course syllabus, add a section the addresses incomplete or late assignments. Again, see Provost’s format.
ECE 482 (new course) was approved by the committee with the following changes:
(a) On the Course Action Form:
- the Abbreviate Title must be 18 characters or fewer
- the effective date needs updated
- add previous prefix number
- change contact hours under IS/R to 2 or 3
- course is not Required rather is Elective, change statement to correct line on form
(b) Page 2, consider using “ECE 383 students” rather than “One-credit students” in 4 sentence in 2nd paragraph.
(c) Page 3, “ C or better” should be C- or better.”
(d) On the course syllabus, use the Academic Integrity boilerplate provided by the Provost’s office. Specifically you must include statement on the Honor Code.
(e) On the course syllabus, add a section the addresses incomplete or late assignments. Again, see Provost’s format.
ECE 483 (new course) was tabled by the committee, to be reviewed pending the following concerns are addressed:
(a) On the Course Action Form:
- the Abbreviate Title must be 18 characters or fewer
- the effective date needs updated
- consider change of the contact hours under Seminar, consistent with ECE 482?
(b) On the course syllabus, use the Academic Integrity boilerplate provided by the Provost’s office. Specifically you must include statement on the Honor Code.
(c) On the course syllabus, add a section that addresses incomplete or late assignments. Again, see Provost’s format.
(d) On the course syllabus, starting with the learning objectives bullet list on page 4 up until the end (which includes texts used, topics covered, readings assignments, et al.) all elements of this course appear to be identical to ECE 482. How is this course different than ECE 482. Would a student who has ECE 482 simply redo the same materials? Please address this concern and differentiate the two courses from a “syllabus perspective.”
