New Business
Major Actions – Course Actions
All actions were approved pending corrections
FLG 398 – a new course was presented by R. Ellovich
The following correction to the action is needed:
- On the cover page, in the Elective field, International Studies Major should be included.
PHI 306 – course to be dropped was presented by R. Ellovich
- Once approved for drop it was noted that this action must be forwarded to CUE for approval since PHI 306 is a GER course under the Additional Humanities and Social Sciences category.
Major Actions – Curriculum Actions
All actions were approved pending corrections:
Revision to the B.A. in Criminology was presented by R. Ellovich
The following correction to the action is needed:
- On page 1 the reference to the degree should read B.A. and not B.S.
- Footnote 6 needs to have the MDS courses listed replaced with the new appropriate course numbers.
- Footnote 8 on page 5 should have the following courses removed BO 222, CH 111, FOR 221 and moved (listed ) in footnote 9.
- In footnote 8 MEA 102/111 needs to be replaced with MEA 202/211.
Revision to the minor in Sociology and Criminology was presented by R. Ellovich
The following correction to the action is needed:
- On page 1 item 7 should read “Under Required Courses on the Sociology Minor form and on the Criminology Minor form add an asterisk following…”
- On page 7 the * item should read “…additional hours of sociology are required at the 300 or 400 level.” The appearance of this statement repeats on page 6 and 8 and must be replaced as stated above.
Dr. Ambrose presented the recommendations by the GER Task Force.
Discussion of the proposed changes to the GER by the committee included the following points:
- In general the committee was supportive of the reduction in the total number of hours from 50-53 to 39.
- The addition of a free elective was supported.
- The “theme” concept was not well received. Since it will be totally optional, the benefit may only be to a small percentage of students. The CHASS faculty does not support the idea of formal GER themes nor does it support the idea of five hours of interdisciplinary course work (the intro course and the capstone).
- With the reduction in GER requirements, courses required by the majors would still be in effect and potentially limit the options available for GER courses.
- Some concern was voiced regarding the effects on total hours potentially increasing above 128, but this will be avoided by required courses for the majors satisfying the new GER requirements.
- Certainly more discussion will ensue and online forums have been established for the university public and the UCCC members to voice their concerns and ideas regarding the proposed GER changes.
