Introduction of Coaches
Coach Kellie Harper [Women’s Basketball] reported that she is pleased with the team’s attitude as they begin practice in preparation for the season. The coaching staff has divided the team into groups of four to improve academic monitoring and communication. Assistant coaches are provided weekly grade reports. The team’s first contest is an exhibition game in Reynolds Coliseum, Monday, November 2nd.

Coach Lisa Navas [Softball] is entering her seventh year as Head Coach at NC State. Coach Navas admitted that last year’s record reflected perhaps the poorest performance during her tenure. In part to build team unity, the players are in study hall from 6:00-8:00pm. The weather has been a challenge with “rain outs” resulting in limited opportunities for practice. This year’s team has five new players. Recruiting is off to a fast start with four prospects for 2010 and two for 2011 visiting campus.

Coach Laurie Henes’ [Women’s Cross Country] team finished a disappointing 10th in the ACC Championships last season. During the preceding two years, the team had been at or near the top of the conference standing. With strategic red shirts being utilized and the addition of eight freshmen, expectations are high for this year. Three or four freshmen are anticipated to be impact players this year and return the team to prominence.

Coach Rollie Geiger [Men’s Cross County and Track & Field] began his coaching career at NC State in 1979. With 32 ACC Championships, he begins the year with a 23rd preseason national ranking. Currently, the team has shifted to morning practices and Coach Geiger describes the team as a good group that is willing to work hard. This year’s team is expected to be very competitive, but also very young with only one senior and the rest of the squad comprised of sophomores and freshmen.

Athletic Department Update
Athletic Director Lee Fowler noted that the $30 increase in the Athletic Debt fee was approved. Mr. Fowler also thanked the Chancellor for his endorsement of the $9 Intercollegiate Athletics Student Fee increase. The fee increased in 2009 by $16.50 and is currently $150.50. The proposed increase of $9.00 will result in a total of $159.50 for AY 2010-11. It was noted that this is still among the lowest in the UNC System and the ACC. Ms. Diane Moose, Associate Athletic Director for Business Operations, returned to bring additional information in regards to the Athletic Department’s financial report to the Council. Director Fowler anticipated that major renovations of the tennis complex would begin in May, 2010. Ms. Michelle Lee, Associate AD for Compliance and Senior Women’s Administrator provided the Council with an update regarding compliance issues. Coaches Stubbs and Harper have volunteered to participate in the Diversity Golf tournament in October.

Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes
Mr. Phil Moses, Executive Director, and Ms. Carrie Leger, Director, of the Academic Support Program for Student Athletes reported on the Provost’s Roundtable and the proposed Tier system to monitor “at risk” student athletes. A search is under way to identify an Academic Coordinator for football. Out of 140 applicants, a search committee has selected four finalists. NC State student athletes continue to compete at a high level for post-graduate honors. To date, 36 out of 39 nominees have received $5,000 ACC post-graduate scholarships. ASPSA described the new senior seminar they direct to assist students to effectively transition into the marketplace following graduation. The Wolfpack Club was recognized for their annual support of $30,000 for the Reconnect Program. Five former student athletes per semester can participate. Contact for the Reconnect Program is Ms. Katie Sheridan.

Student-Athlete Advisory Committee

SAAC representatives described their intent to develop a social event at the Weisiger-Brown Building once a month during the broadcast of Monday Night Football. SAAC members have packed 75 lunch bags in conjunction with the Imagine No Hunger campaign.
