Authentication Requirement
North Carolina State University supports two learning management systems for course content delivery, Vista and WolfWare.
Vista is designed to allow only students registered in a specific class into the web content of the class. As such, Vista courses and their content would satisfy the authentication requirement of the TEACH Act.
WolfWare is more flexible and allows content to be designated as either open or protected. The default "www" directory in a WolfWare locker is open, i.e. unrestricted access. However, there is also a "wrap" directory available that can be configured to allow access only to authorized students. If configured this way, WolfWare courses and their content would satisfy the authentication requirement of the TEACH Act.
The university recommends that faculty use only WolfWare or Vista for course content delivery. Faculty must have a secure authentication technology in place to use the TEACH exemptions, and are reminded that it is solely their responsibility to implement effective authentication technology if they choose something other than Vista or Wolfware.
