Faculty Involvement in the Process of Selecting a Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dean, or Academic Department Head - SOP
The administrative official responsible for the appointment consults with appropriate individuals and groups, including the faculty constituency directly affected, concerning the size and composition of the nomination committee. Specifically,
- The Chancellor consults with the Faculty Senate when filling the position of Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The chancellor shall conduct the search in accordance with POL 05.55.1 Search and Selection Procedures for Senior Academic and Administrative Officers (Tier I).
- The Provost consults with the Faculty Senate members from the college involved when filling the position of Dean. Provost asks the Senators of the college to conduct an election to select by secret ballot a list of faculty members to recommend to the Provost. At least one-third of the Nomination Committee will be selected by this method.
- The Dean consults with a faculty group representing each rank within the department involved when filling the position of Department Head. Dean asks this group to conduct an election to select by secret ballot, at least, one-third of the Nomination Committee.
The administrative official responsible for the appointment will seek the assistance of the Nomination Committee to:
- Solicit suggestions concerning criteria and/or nominations for the position.
- Review and evaluate applicants.
- Recommend applicants for preliminary telephone and/or airport interviews as appropriate.
- Recommend finalists for on-campus interviews.
- When candidates are brought to campus, help inform the faculty and provide appropriate opportunities for participation in the interview process.
- Provide feedback on the finalists.
